Step 1: Sanding
A sander removes the existing finish and any surface scratches or imperfections. Typically, there are several rounds of sanding with ever-finer sandpaper. A hand-held sander may be used for corners, edges or other hard-to-reach spots to ensure an even, level surface before the next step of the refinishing process.
Step 2: Cleaning & Staining
Then, the floor is vacuumed and mopped to remove dust and debris. A very clean surface is crucial for a flawless stain and finish. If your wood floor is being re-colored using a stain, this is the next step. Stains must dry completely before floor finishing products are applied.
Step 3: Finishing & Buffing
A high-quality polyurethane floor finish is applied, and several coats may be needed, with enough drying time provided between them. After the final coat has dried, the floor is buffed with a fine-grit sandpaper or a buffer to smooth out any imperfections and create a silky finish. Once the finish is cured, it’s time to reinstall the baseboards and return the furniture to the room.
